Existentialist HCI
نویسنده
چکیده
HCI has borrowed some concepts from existential phenomenology, in particular Dreyfus’s interpretation of Heidegger’s philosophy. Not all concepts have been widely discussed, and it is urgently important to investigate further consequences of existential phenomenology on research and design of technology. ”Presence-at-hand” and ”readiness-at-hand” are two concepts that have been accomodated into the HCI terminology. However, other implications of existential phenomenology do not lend themselves so easily into technological design. The reason is that technology itself stands under serious criticism. If we take phenomenology seriously, we must also discuss its critique of technology. I argue that we must follow through on the implications thereof, even to the point of making technology more marginal in our society.

Narrative Construction of Authenticity in Pilgrimage Touring
This paper analyses the shift from constructivist to existentialist conceptions of authenticity in tourism. I argue that the existentialist approach represents a withdrawal from an ongoing and unresolved debate, rather than the reconciliation that it has sometimes been presented as. Such an approach has divorced the notion of authenticity from any inherent relationship to the act of touring. Ut...

Comments on the original article "Life is pretty meaningful," by S. J. Heintzelman and L. A. King (see record 2014-03265-001). Heintzelman and King explored meaning in life (MIL), which they acknowledged "remains, in some ways, a construct and experience shrouded in mystery" (p. 561). Unfortunately, they dealt with this complex topic in a very simplistic way. They claimed that "from an existent...

In Britain and America the few papers that have appeared on this topic have not always been enthusiastic. The problems of psychiatry and psychology are slowly being formulated in ways that lend themselves to th...
